Tell us about your career path. How did you start out and what steps did you take to grow and advance in your profession?

As a Community Health Worker (CHW) with a background in nursing, my behavioral health career journey has been both fulfilling and rewarding. As a CHW, I play a vital role in bridging the gap between healthcare providers and individuals in need. I have built strong relationships with clients, establishing trust and providing them with the support they need to navigate the complex behavioral health system. My role has included conducting assessments, providing education and resources, advocating for clients’ needs, and assisting in care coordination.

First, I completed my bachelor’s in nursing, which provided me with a strong foundation in healthcare. I then obtained my nursing license and began working in various healthcare settings, including hospitals and clinics. During this time, I developed a passion for public health and realized the importance of addressing behavioral health issues within the community.

Next, I decided to pursue additional training in public health to broaden my knowledge and skills. I became a certified Public Health Advisor, which allowed me to work directly with communities and address their behavioral health needs. This role involved conducting outreach programs, providing education on mental health, and connecting individuals to appropriate resources and services.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, my journey with NYC Health and Hospitals (H+H) began. I joined the initiative as a Community Engagement Specialist, playing a crucial role in contact tracing and breaking the chain of transmission. This experience further deepened my understanding of the impact of mental health on individuals and communities during times of crisis.

In addition to my professional roles, I have also engaged in volunteering and internships related to behavioral health. I have worked with local mental health organizations, facilitating support groups and providing assistance to individuals in need.

Overall, I chose to pursue this career because I wanted to make a difference in the lives of individuals struggling with behavioral health issues. Through my education, training, and various job roles, I have been able to contribute to the well-being of the community and advocate for mental health awareness and support.

Were there any obstacles, unexpected circumstances, or hardships you had to navigate while pursuing your education and career goals? How did you handle these challenges?

Yes, there were certainly obstacles and challenges that I encountered. One of the major challenges was balancing work and study commitments. As I was working in healthcare settings while pursuing my education, it was often challenging to manage my time effectively and find a balance between work responsibilities and academic requirements. This required careful planning, prioritization, and effective time management skills.

Another challenge I faced was adapting to the constantly evolving nature of the healthcare industry. The sudden surge in demand for healthcare services and the need to quickly adapt to new protocols and guidelines posed challenges in terms of keeping up with the changes and ensuring the delivery of quality care. I addressed this challenge by staying updated with the latest research, attending relevant trainings and webinars, and seeking guidance from experienced professionals in the field.

Additionally, working in the field of behavioral health often presented emotional challenges. Dealing with individuals facing mental health issues and witnessing their struggles can be emotionally draining. It required self-care strategies, such as seeking support from colleagues and supervisors, practicing mindfulness and self-reflection, and engaging in activities outside of work that helped me recharge and maintain my own mental well-being.

In navigating these challenges, I learned the importance of resilience, adaptability, and a proactive mindset. I sought support from mentors and peers, continuously sought opportunities for professional development, and remained committed to my passion for improving behavioral health outcomes. Through perseverance and determination, I was able to overcome these challenges and continue progressing in my education and career goals.
